Fertility Europe's presence at the ESHRE 2024 Congress in Amsterdam was a vibrant and successful showcase of networking and partnerships. Along with Fertility Europe, Coalition for Fertility members were well represented, with the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE), who was hosting the Congress, and the European Parliamentary Forum for Sexual and Reproductive Rights (EPF) and the International Federation of Fertility Societies (IFFS).
Fertility Europe’s booth highlighted the projects done in cooperation with its partners - European Atlas of Fertility Treatment Policies 2024 - a joint project with EPF with their representative Silvia Traina participating in many presentations and exchanges. FActs! The game created in cooperation with ESHRE, attracted global attention and sparked meaningful conversations about the need for comprehensive sexuality education for teenagers including also important facts about fertility.
Our chair, Klaudija Kordic, moderated the IFFS (another member of the Coalition!) session titled “Fertility Free Fall – Where Do You Stand.” addressing the issue of declining global fertility rates and presenting an IFFS consensus document based on a narrative review of the literature.
Fertility Europe in its annual patient session addressed the issue of gamete donation. The session “Donation: a 360° view,” featured speakers presenting diverse aspects of donation. Ana Galhardo spoke as a psychologist from Portugal, a country where donation was recently changed from anonymous to identity release, Timo Ramu as a donor conceived child finding out about it accidentally, and Maciej Smiechowski about his experience as a patient needing donation. This session, praised for its depth and engagement, underscored the need for comprehensive education and regulatory reforms in gamete donation.
Anita Fincham's opening remarks at the “Policy Solutions to Improve Access to Fertility Treatment and Optimise Patient Care” panel set a resonant tone, emphasising critical issues in the conversation about reproductive autonomy and fostering the needs of various groups represented by the Coalition for Fertility members. Throughout the conference, we engaged in numerous productive meetings, initiating new collaborations and strengthening existing relationships. As we look ahead, the connections and knowledge gained at ESHRE 2024 inspire us to continue our mission defined in the statement of the Coalition for Fertility with renewed vigour and dedication.
